Movie Review- Man of God (1hr 51mins)

The movie has a similar story told in the bible of the Prodigal Son but in a different dimension.

While the Prodigal son spent all his fortune, Samuel, in the movie, ‘Man of God’, from a Christian family, forsakes the upbringing from his dad, Prophet Josiah Obalolu to live his own worldly life- but his soul remains caught between the world and the faith he left behind.

Samuel received countless beatings from his religious father, who didn’t want him to associate himself with worldly things. So, Samuel decided to leave the house to start his own life.

While in campus, he gained popularity as an afro singer and was in a relationship with one of his singers, Rekya Danbo. Rekya is a hustler and does everything to make money for both her and Sam. She later engaged in drugs so that they could live a better life.

Sam’s mum make use of Teju Williams, a family friend in writing letters to Sam but never got a response from Sam because he despised his dad.

Teju attends Sam’s social night in return that Sam will come to her Christian fellowship. After the social night, Teju introduces Sam to Joy Obah and Sam feels a spark for her. Teju’s jealousy grew as she began avoiding Joy because of Sam interest towards her.

He begins to attend fellowship and visits library often so that he can win Joy’s heart and see her often.

Rekya got a house through her drugs dealings and Sam was overjoyed about her hustling spirit.

A graduation ceremony was held at the church and Joy was introduced to Pastor Zach whom she later married after she lost communication with Sam.

After Sam learnt she was married, he became restless for days. Teju came to his rescue and stood by him till he became a better person. Teju and Sam got married and they became workers in the church.

While married with Teju, Sam still has memories with Joy and hopes to meet her one day.

Jojo calls Sam on phone to tell her about her pregnancy but Sam had already arranged for her doing abortion which eventually led to her death.

Teju discovers about the pregnancy with Jojo but kept it silent and never confronted Sam about it. Teju endures every colour of attitude in her marriage with Sam because she wants the relationship to work and she hopes one day Sam would be redeemed.

The Bishop and his wife speak to Sam and Teju about the ongoing rumor about his sexual misdemeanor with young female members of the church.

Rekya is back from abroad and she reconnects with Sam. Because he wasn’t happy with the way the church were treating him, he decided to open his own church with the advice of Rekya, with the sole aim of making money.

Because of his booming church business, Sam reconnects with Joy and convinces her to continue where they started; but because she was committed to Zach, she didn’t accept.

Sam went further to make preparations for himself and Joy to relocate to Canada, unfortunately, the plans were scattered immediately Teju found out.

The moment, Teju said, ‘I made you and I have the power to destroy you’ was the beginning of Sam’s miserable life in prison

Teju took all his documents and sent it to the police. Sam was arrested for all his crimes and lost everything.

After many years in prison, he was released and went to ask for forgiveness from his father.

 

It is a good that draws one back to their faith in God. The actors played their roles well especially Rekya and Sammy who did exceptional. The Movie started in the church and ended in the church.

Inasmuch the narration is simple, the movie script was poorly written. It looked so rushed like everything just happened quickly in the Movie. It could be because the script writer was also the director, actor and even executive producer.
