Cuba approves same sex marriage in unusual referendum
Cuban voted to legalize same sex marriage and adoption which changes the family code by allowing same- sex couples to marry and adopt. They also approved laws allowing surrogate pregnancies, broader rights for grandparents against gender violence.
The reforms had met strong open resistance from the growing evangelical movement in Cuba- despite an elaborate government campaign in favour of the measure, including numerous informative meetings across the country with media coverage.
The measure had been approved by Cuba’s parliament, the National Assembly, after years of debate about such reforms. Currently, Cuba approves same sex marriage.
The measure which contains more than 400 articles- was approved by 66.9% to 33.1%, as reported by the President of the National Electoral Council, Alina Balseiro Gutierrez.
It would be recalled that in 2019, the government sought to include same sex marriage in the country’s new constitution but backed down after criticism from the church. The Catholic Conference of Bishops in Cuba (CBCC) openly came out against the new measures.
President Miguel Diaz Canel, celebrated the approval by tweeting ‘Love is now the law’
‘Most of our people will vote in favour of the code, but it still has issues that our society as a whole does not understand.
Some social media followers reacted to this approval of the same sex marriage- ‘They approve gay marriage but cannot get more food, better pay.’
Some people have been starving for weeks to get food or medical attention and approving same sex marriage seems to be their priority.
