China Develops Nuclear Battery That Could Charge Your Phone for 50 Years

A Chinese startup has developed a nuclear battery that they claim could power your phone for 50 years without needing to be recharged. The battery, made by Beijing-based Betavolt, is the first of its kind to miniaturize atomic energy. It is made up of 63 nuclear isotopes packed into a module smaller than a coin.

The battery works by converting the energy released by decaying isotopes into electricity. This process, known as betavoltaics, has been around for decades, but Betavolt is the first company to successfully miniaturize it.

The current version of the battery produces 100 microwatts of power, which is enough to power low-power devices like pacemakers and hearing aids. However, Betavolt plans to increase the power output to 1 watt by 2025, which would be enough to power smartphones and other devices.
