Twenty Five, Twenty One Movie is a 2022 Netflix release which is among this season’s most interesting Korea romance dramas. It stars Kim Tae-ri as Na Hee-Do, Nam Joo-Hyuk as Back Yijin, and idol group WSJN’s Bona as Ko Yu-Rim.
The story presents us in two timelines, 1998 and 2022, capturing one of the most economic disasters- International Monetary Fund (IMF) Disaster and the present-day’s COVID-19 pandemic.
Season 1 has 16 episodes having over 1hr each run time.
Twenty Five Twenty One- Episode 1
This story is about Min- Chae who lost ability to do ballet but later picked up after going through her mum’s diary (Na Hee- Do) and reading all her secrets, challenges and wining abilities as a Fencer. Although, it showed more of what happened in Hee-Do’s life more than Min Chae.
The drama made use of both flashbacks and foreshadowing techniques which were beautifully merged to give a clearer picture of the individual character and their roles in the Movie.
The story started with 40-year-old Na Hee-Do (Kim So-Hyun) taking her daughter Kim Min-Chae (Choi Myung-Bin) to a ballet competition. Hee-Do reminded Min-Chae that winning isn’t everything and what’s important is for Min-Chae to give her all to the competition. Min-Chae thought differently, saying that there was no point in being there if she was not competing to win.
While waiting for her turn to compete, Min-Chae felt defeated after seeing her ‘rival’ perform the number beautifully. Min-Chae felt intimidated and walked out of the competition without performing. This led to her being disqualified. Hee-Do confronted Min-Chae but Min-Chae said she’ll quit ballet because she’s not good at it anyway.
The scene cut to Min-Chae going to Hee-Do’s childhood home where Hee-Do’s grandmother (Shin Hyun-Sook) lives. Min-Chae said she ran away from home and will spend Summer with granny.
Min-Chae started to rummage through her mother’s old possessions and found Hee-Do’s old Diary. Min-Chae read through it and started learning about her mother’s 18-year-old self (Kim Tae-Ri), including Hee-Do’s youthful aspirations, frustrations, and relationships.
The IMF crises made Na Hee Do school (Seon Jung) to stop fencing and because of her passion, she pleads with her mum to transfer her to Tae Yang High School so that she can continue fencing
She ran into Back Yijin, the 22 years old lad when he came to drop morning newspaper and got their water sculpture broken.
She comes to return the borrowed book and meets YiJin at Myeongjin Book Rentals where he is doing a part time job. Here, they reached an agreement between the sculpture, the snot on the returned book and then Full House 11 book.
She meets with the coach of Tae Yang High School, Coach Yang Chan- Mi, and pleads she takes her in to join the fencing team. Na Hee Do pleads she was willing to do anything for the coach to allow her in.
She was afraid her mum won’t transfer her, so she decided to commit crimes that could warrant her being transferred to another school. Unfortunately, it didn’t work
The Coach put her on a test which she eventually passes.
